Wednesday Wisdom and Self Care

What do you do to take care of YOU?

There are five basic areas of “self-care”:

  • Physical: taking care of your body (i.e. sleep, exercise)
  • Mental: finding a balance between stimulating your brain and resting it, includes self talk (i.e.. goals, creativity)
  • Spiritual: developing meaning, understanding and connection to the universe; living values and beliefs that give you purpose (i.e.. meditation/prayer, nature, worship)
  • Social: sense of connection, belonging and acceptance with other people (i.e.. family, friends, service to others)
  • Emotional: learning to deal with uncomfortable emotions, being aware and learning to take care of them (i.e.. set boundaries, do thought work)

I used to think taking time for me was selfish. That it looked like a long time away from my kids. Taking a weekend once or twice a year wasn’t enough anyway, because all the responsibilities came right back. Now I know that consistent daily activities are the most effective…things like sleep, movement, water, sunlight, breathing, date night or lunch with a friends, and doing something challenging or creative just for me…in addition to occasional weekends away. It can be hard to find time so look for small windows of opportunity and make YOU a priority.
